The Saturday after Pentecost
We're reminded in the first reading today from the Epistle of St. James about the power of our tongue and the words we say, the power we have to do both good and evil with our tongue. It's something we should remind ourselves of often. In fact, St. James goes so far as to advise that not many people become teachers, 'for you realize that we will be judged more strictly.' Hmm. Definitely something we should all ponder seriously. We are all teachers in a sense, certainly as parents or grandparents we have a very significant teaching responsibility, one that must be constantly scrutinized. St. James compares our tongue to the bit in the mouth of a horse or a small rudder that steers a ship, small things that can control something must larger. He also reminds us how a small fire can ignite a huge blaze. The tongue is also a fire, St. James tells us. In this day of communication, the spoken word is so very important. This is why those of us in the field of radio must especially pray for wisdom and guidance from the Holy Spirit. We are certainly teachers and we will, as St. James reminds us, be judges more strictly by the Lord. And each of us can take this advice to heart today, remembering that each time we open our mouths, we made a decision, to speak for peace or for division, for good or for evil, for the Lord or against Him.
Holy Spirit, please guide us and bless our words. Amen.
